For coffee lovers who travel for a better cup.

How we choose

Roaster Route is a guide for people who plan trips around coffee. Every café on this site roasts its own beans, and we look at filter coffee first and espresso second.

What gets a café on the list

  • It roasts in-house. The café roasts its own beans, on site or at its own roastery. Cafés that only serve other roasters' coffee are left out, with a few clearly marked exceptions for special concepts.
  • Filter coffee is taken seriously. Pour-over, siphon or other manual brewing is a real part of the menu. Good espresso is a plus.
  • Guests are happy. We check each café's Google Maps rating. The bar is 4.5, or 4.3 in countries where even the most celebrated cafés score lower, such as Japan and Korea.
  • Awards help. Barista, brewers and roasting championship results, and world rankings, count in a café's favor.

The bean grades

Worth a journey. A reason to plan a trip on its own.
Worth a detour. Go out of your way when you are in that city.
Worth a stop if nearby. A good cup if you are in the area.

What we don't do

We don't sell coffee, take payment for listings or publish user reviews. The site is supported by advertising. Opening hours and menus change, so check Google Maps before you go.

Something wrong or missing?
