Why it’s on the route

Café du Monde began in 1862 as a coffee stand at the upriver end of the French Market and is still run by the Fernandez family. The menu is famously short: dark-roasted coffee blended with chicory, served black or au lait, and beignets in orders of three under a heap of powdered sugar. It is an open-air café, better understood as a New Orleans landmark than a specialty coffee stop.
