Why it’s on the route

Big Island Coffee Roasters grew from a neglected Puna farm its founders bought in 2010, launching the roastery in 2013 and helping put Puna on the map as a coffee region. Its first public space, a 4,000-square-foot café and roastery on Kalanianaole Street, opened in 2023 with a viewing window onto a custom San Franciscan roaster. The bar serves Hawaiian-grown coffee as espresso, drip micro-lots, nitro, cold brew and tasting flights.
