Why it’s on the route

Groundwork began in 1991 when Richard Karno opened a small rare-books shop and coffee roastery on Rose Avenue in Venice, and in 1994 it became one of the first certified organic coffee roasters in Southern California. It has since grown into a sizeable LA brand with around ten cafés and grocery distribution, but the Rose Avenue café marks where it started.
