Why it’s on the route

Das Kaffeehaus is the cafe of Coffee Basics, a small-batch roastery run by the Schaerf family, who draw on a roasting and blending tradition of about sixty years. It occupies a repurposed woollen mill in Castlemaine and serves Vienna-style coffee on a terrace across from the Botanical Gardens. The Austrian menu, with schnitzel, goulash and apfelstrudel, makes it as much a meal as a coffee stop.
