GB5 Lab in Zhubei is run by Ye Rong-cong, a retired PE teacher and former national track coach who opened his first café in Hsinchu in 2006 and taught himself to roast; he won the TISCA roasting competition in 2012. The shop, named after La Marzocco's GB5 espresso machine, is known locally for house-roasted, hand-brewed coffee. The room is small and tidy, and guests can sit at the counter and talk coffee with the owner.
