Why it’s on the route

Maruyama Coffee was founded in 1991 by Kentaro Maruyama as a kissaten at a Karuizawa B&B, and roasts its own coffee there; its baristas won the Japan Barista Championship five years running, and Hidenori Izaki took the 2014 World title while with the company. French press has been its standard brew since 2003. The Nishi-Azabu shop pairs minimal design and green sofas with a wall showing some thirty coffees and their farms.
