Special concept: worth seeing for what it is
Sabou Tenjou Sajiki
Yufu, Japan
Why it’s on the route
Sabou Tenjou Sajiki is the tearoom of Kamenoi Bessou, a century-old inn in Yufuin near Lake Kinrin. It occupies the attic, once a koji room, of a late-Edo sake brewery moved onto the grounds, now above the Kagiya shop, with barrel-top tables, an old gramophone, Gregorian chant playing and window seats over the garden. The house Tenjo Sajiki Blend pairs with the Mont Yufu, a cream-cheese dessert shaped like Mount Yufu.
