Why it’s on the route

Motomachi Kissa is a small kissaten near Kobe's Motomachi Station, opened in 2009 by an owner who took over a space that had served as a coffee shop since the 1980s. The building, furniture and fittings were kept as they were, so the 18-seat room still feels Showa-era. Coffee is hand-poured, and the house favourite is a firm, old-style custard pudding with bitter caramel, served in a footed silver dish.
