Why it’s on the route

Afro Joe's moved to Beverly from Auburn Gresham and now fills a former garden store, with a slim coffee bar, a full-service lunch menu and an indoor-outdoor courtyard. It roasts its own coffee, leaning toward light roasts, pulled on an Astoria espresso machine, with Publican Quality Bread pastries on the counter. Sandwiches are named after Chicago neighbourhoods, and the café runs community events from cigar nights to kids' movie screenings.
