Why it’s on the route

Kusanya opened in 2013 near 69th and Halsted as a community café for Englewood; its name is Swahili for 'gathering'. It is run as a non-profit with a board that includes neighbourhood residents, founded by Phil Sipka, and keeps prices low so people of all incomes can come in. Beyond coffee, the brick-walled room holds a lending library, local art, yoga classes and live music.
