Why it’s on the route
Build started in 2016 as a coffee stand at the 61st Street Farmers Market and moved in 2017 into the Experimental Station incubator in Woodlawn, founded by Hannah Nyhart and Bea Malsky. It has served as a community 'third space' with teach-ins and artist residencies, and holds one of the South Side's largest public zine collections. In 2025 writer Eve L. Ewing, trina reynolds-tyler and Andrea Faye Hart took it over as Build Coffee and Books.
