Why it’s on the route
Coffee By Design was founded in 1994 by Mary Allen Lindemann and Alan Spear and helped start Portland's buy-local movement; it began roasting in 1998. The Diamond Street headquarters, opened in 2014, combines the roastery, offices and a coffeehouse, and the company funds local art and works on projects with farm partners in Colombia, Guatemala, India and Burundi.
