Special concept: worth seeing for what it is
Peet's Coffee
Berkeley · North Berkeley / Gourmet Ghetto, United States
Why it’s on the route
This corner of Vine and Walnut is where Alfred Peet, who had learned roasting from his father in the Netherlands, opened his first roastery and store in 1966, selling fresh, dark-roasted beans at a time when American coffee was mostly canned. The founders of Starbucks learned from Peet and copied this shop's layout. Peet's now roasts in Alameda, but the original store is still open and still pours coffee.
