Worth a detour
Xela Coffee Roasters
Houston · East End / Second Ward, United States
Why it’s on the route
Xela was launched in 2014 by Benji Aguilar and Kaitlin O'Brien, named for Quetzaltenango, the Guatemalan city Aguilar's parents come from; Aguilar learned roasting at Katz Coffee and is a certified Q grader. After years as a Second Ward walk-up window, it reopened in 2026 as its first sit-down café on Richmond Avenue in Montrose. The menu pairs house-roasted coffee with Latin American–inspired drinks such as a 48-hour cold brew with panela and orange peel.
