Why it’s on the route

Monorail Espresso began on December 1, 1980, when Chuck Beek parked a cart under the Monorail at Westlake, often cited as the world's first espresso cart. After several moves it became a walk-up window on Pike Street in 1997, and former barista Aimee Peck has owned it since 2012, adding a few more downtown outposts. Expect quick double-shot espresso drinks, chubby cookies and a joke menu that charges for tourist directions.
