Why it’s on the route

Coffee-only kissaten Bigin has been run by one family in Sakae since 1951, and third-generation owner Masakaze Kato took over from his father in 2018. He roasts early each morning on a 4kg direct-fire roaster, visible through glass beside the half-basement counter, and brews hot coffee by nel flannel drip. The menu runs to some twenty coffee drinks, including an ice-drip iced coffee and a spiced mocha chai, with no food.
