Why it’s on the route

Big Shoulders was started by Tim Coonan, a former Spiaggia chef who moved from fine dining into coffee, and roasts beans sourced from farms around the world for its Chicago cafés. The original Chicago Avenue shop in West Town serves two crowds at once: fast self-serve drip for Blue Line commuters, and pour-overs and espresso for those who stay, with an Ethiopia Limu pour-over among the house favourites.
